Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I choose detailing versus just washing my own car?
Detailing does more than merely clean your car. It preserves and in some cases restores its original condition through a professional, and thorough process involving bug, tar, sap, lime removal, tire and rim treatment, interior leather and vinyl conditioning, carpet and headliner shampooing, wet sanding, waxing and applied protectants that keep your car’s paint job looking like it just arrived in the showroom. Moreover, regular detailing extends the life of your car, maintains the safety and integrity of your vehicle, and actually adds to its value.
Where do you do this?
As we are mobile, we can do our auto detailing at your home or office, as long as our work space is not inhibited by such things as low hanging tree branches, parked cars or anything else that would limit our access to your vehicle.
Our unit is completely self-contained – we bring our own water, power and supplies – there are no hidden costs.
And with our Eco-Friendly auto detailing system, you don’t have to worry about anything harming your environment.
How often should a vehicle be detailed?
At least once per year. Detailing has proven to be effective in getting you a better resale/trade-in price. So, if you are planning on selling/trading your car, make sure to have it detailed within a week of selling/trading it.
It is usually when selling a vehicle that most people consider detailing. But, by that time (an average of 5 years), the vehicle has too much wear and tear to restore it to a like-new condition. That’s why we urge our customers to think of auto detailing as a maintenance program the same as changing the fluids, getting a tune-up, or rotating the tires. Most people don’t realize that in most cases, it is less expensive to replace the engine than to replace a “factory paint job”! We recommend at least 2 to 5 times a year depending on your driving and car washing habits and how you store your vehicle. Is it parked inside or outside most of the time? Do you wash it every other day or maybe only once a month? How do you wash it? Do you spend so much time in your vehicle that you feel like it’s your home? These are just some of the determining factors that we consider in recommending what maintenance schedule is best for you.
Why have my vehicle detailed during the winter or when its raining? It’s just going to get dirty.
Contrary to some belief, winter is a very important time to have your vehicle detailed. We all know it’s nice to enjoy your shiny paint, wheels, and glass when the sun is out without contaminants on their surfaces. Some of these contaminants include but are not limited to mud, road tar, grit, grime, salt, acid rain, and industrial fallout.
When these surfaces are protected with carnauba wax, paint sealant, or a ceramic coating most of the contaminants are repelled away from these surfaces. Any contaminants that are not repelled away are actually sticking to said protective products, not the paint surface therefore can be removed much easier than if your vehicle is not protected.
A vehicle without a fresh coat of carnauba wax, paint sealant, or ceramic coating is exposed to the brutality of the elements. Exposure to adverse conditions can doom your precious paint to oxidation, scratches, swirl marks, and corrosion.
By the time summer rolls around your vehicle’s paintwork is in bad shape. Your detailer will have to spend more time cleaning and polishing your vehicle. Its definitely more cost-effective to maintain your exterior throughout the year plus you get the luxury of always having a clean car.
In order to maintain your vehicle’s finish properly, we recommend having your paintwork compounded, polished, and protected with carnauba wax or paint sealant at least once a year with regular maintenance.
It’s also very important to keep the interior of your vehicle clean all year. The contaminants from the road can easily get inside and stain your carpets, seats, and upholstery. The interior of your vehicle can also create health issues from microorganisms and surface contamination.
Over time food particles, dust mites, fungus, and bacteria will grow inside your vehicle causing you and your family to get sick. We have seen some minivans that actually contained the bacteria level of an entire daycare center. Just like your vehicle’s exterior. It’s all about cleaning, anti-bacterial protection, and maintenance.
My vehicle is new. Does it need to be detailed?
We frequently receive phone calls from customers who have recently purchased a new vehicle. When asked what detail service they would like, they often reply “well, it’s a brand new car so it doesn’t need much”. Unfortunately, that statement often proves to be a bit off base.
Just because your vehicle is new doesn’t necessarily mean the paint finish is flawless. Often times when a vehicle leaves the factory there are many paint imperfections that are missed by quality control personnel. Some of these imperfections are dirt specks, run lines, wet sanding marks, pigtails from a D/A sander, and hologramming from improper polishing techniques.
At the car dealership, many times the vehicle is washed improperly by inexperienced lot attendants causing scratches and swirl marks. Ideally, before you take delivery ask them not to wash your vehicle.
We know you’re proud of your new car. Protect your investment with our detailing for your paint, wheels, fabric, and glass.
My car is leased, should I have it detailed?
Definitely, the better your car’s appearance and condition, the better trade value you will get on your car, and the less they will charge you for reconditioning the car.
I bought a smokers car. What can you do about that?
Smoke odor is one of the most challenging problems for a detailer. We have to clean the entire interior including the headliner and use our ozone generator to minimize or eliminate the odor. Sometimes, another treatment is required. We use the best odor eliminators on the market for all odors including smoke.
Frequently Asked Questions About
Paint Correction
What causes swirls?
Swirls are actually fine thin scratches all over the paint that reflect back with light. They make cars look dull by diffusing the light and dulling the reflections. Swirls are caused by dirt or other contaminants rubbing against the paint. Low quality towels, dirty towels, and dirty wash sponges can cause very serious swirling. Automated car washes are at the top of the list for causing swirls. Their goal is speed and efficiency. Not quality and effectiveness. How many times have you seen dozens of cars waiting on line for the automated wash. How many cars is that in a year? 100’s? 1000’s? Now think of all of the dirt, rocks, and even road salt stuck on the car heading in before you. That gets all over the automated brushes and towels about to slap themselves up against your car. Then the low-grade towels being reused over and over again outside. Now you understand why they are commonly called, “Swirl-O-Matics.”
Is paint correction permanent?
Paint Correction as defined above is the process of eliminating swirls and scratches through mechanical polishing. This process will remove all visible defects for as long as you maintain the vehicle correctly. Improper washing and automated car washes will greatly improve your chances of scratching the surface again.
How much time does paint correction take?
On average you can expect to see new car prep coming in around 4-8 hours of polishing time, for a vehicle that is a few years old with mild neglect we expect 6-20 hours for paint correction. These are just averages and an actual time estimate will be provided in person under the proper lighting conditions.
Does paint correction help resale value?
Why should your car just be another average, swirled up car on the road? Did you know studies show that a swirl-free and smooth paint job is worth over 25% more! That is thousands of dollars in your pocket if you choose to resell. Why wouldn’t you maximize the value of your investment or pride and joy?
What is Paint Clay Bar decontamination?
The process of using multiple grades of clay bar to decontaminate the exterior paint work and embedded contaminants.
What is a multi-stage paint correction?
Multi-stage paint correction can be defined as re-leveling, rejuvenation, and renovation. Here at Midnight Madness Detailing, it is the usage of high-tech tools and materials coupled with knowledge and experience to permanently remove any swirl marks, spider webbing, fine to deep scratches, water spots, bird dropping etchings, and other paint defects. Our expertise lies in restoring your cars paint to a better-than-new condition, revealing an optically clear and smooth finish.
Does my vehicle need a paint correction?
It is a common misconception that a brand new vehicle requires no paint correction and that the paint is fresh from the factory. It is the dealerships usual practice to do a new car prep before delivering to the customer. Dealerships will always use the fastest and cost effective way to prep the car, which inevitably creates these imperfections. In addition to that, the dealership detailers uses a body shop glaze and a combination of high speed machines with dirty wool pads to create that show car shine under the showroom lights. This merely helps to create extra gloss, hiding all the imperfections remaining.
Frequently Asked Questions About
Ceramic Coating
HOW MUCH DOES CERAMIC COATING COST?
Depending on the condition of your vehicle prices can range from $500 all the way up to a few thousand dollars depending on what you are looking for.
Another factor that plays into the pricing for ceramic coating is the size of your vehicle. For example, a full sized SUV is going to be more expensive than a smaller compact vehicle.
WHAT IS A CERAMIC COATING?
Ceramic coatings are extremely durable vehicle protection systems. Depending on the coating used they are suitable for use on paintwork, wheels, glass, and plastic trim.
The basic chemical composition of a ceramic coating is Silicon Dioxide (SiO2). Ceramic coatings may also be referred to as quartz or glass coatings.
ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CERAMIC COATINGS?
There are many products available on the market. The principle differences are the amount of SiO2) content in the product. Some have levels as low as 5% as typically found in maintenance sprays. Others have as much as 70%. As a general rule the higher the level of SiO2 the more durable the product will be.
ARE CERAMIC COATINGS A MIRACLE ‘FIRE AND FORGET’ PRODUCT?
Absolutely not, despite being very durable they still need maintaining. Beware of the hype that comes with many car treatment systems (ceramic and dealership applied treatments) that promise ‘no polishing’ and ‘lifetime protection with no maintenance as part of the deal.
We have worked on countless vehicles with various coating systems applied and have yet to find any that meet the often extravagant claims made by the industry. It is simply not possible to coat a car, then treat it to the occasional wash, and for it to remain glossy and contaminant-free several years down the road.
How many layers of ceramic coating does a car need?
Nanoceramic coatings don’t layer well, so properly applying a ceramic coating to a car’s finish the first time should be all that is needed. The only reason why people tend to coat a vehicle twice is to guarantee that no areas were missed during the first application.
What Does a Ceramic Coating Not Do?
Ceramic Coating is not a miracle, super-cure product that will solve any and every problem for your car. Thus, it is important for you to know what Ceramic Coating does not do.
Ceramic Coating does not:
-
Eliminate the Danger of Scratches, Swirl Marks, or Rock Chips
-
Eliminate the Risk of Water Spotting
-
Eliminate the Need to Wash
What surfaces can I use Ceramic Spray Coating on?
Ceramic Coating provides protection to an extreme range of areas on your vehicle. Paint, Wheels, Glass, Headlights, Plastic trim, Bed liners, Tonneau covers, Canvas tops, Floor mats, Unfinished metal— All can be protected with Ceramic Coating.
